Hey, All !! Welcome to the newly uploaded unofficial HGSPC Web Site! I thank all of you who provided input and ideas for this site- the inspiration was the game and the very cool people who hang out at the HGSPC themselves. Thanks to SCION for his technical assistance and to Ducas for her patience and input! See ya's all on the court- and BTW- don't forget to set me up a few! ;-) Eddie

JUST WANTED TO THANK THE PERSON IN CHARGE OF SETTING UP THE SITE. I THINK ITS A GREAT THING TO DO FOR OUR SPORT. I HAVE BEEN PLAYING ON THOSE COURTS SINCE I WAS ABOUT 14 YEARS OLD. I WORKED MY WAY FROM PLAYING ON THE BACK SIDE TO PLAYING WITH THE BIG GUYS ON THE "A" COURT IN THE EARLY 80'S. HOPEFULLY THIS WILL PROMOTE OUR SPORT TO THE YOUNGER GENERATION. I AM LOOKING FORWARD TO PLAYING IN THE TOURNAMENT ON FEB. 7th. HOPE WE HAVE A LOT OF FAN SUPPORT. THANKS AGAIN.

Well Eddie thumbs up on making the site. It turned out great. You must have put a lot of work into it! I enjoy playing paddleball at Hollywood beach. I have brought a lot of friends down to play and its great exercise for anyone at any age. I started playing about a year ago from seeing my parents come. They used to play paddleball when they were in High School in fact that's where they met for the first time. So I'll see ya on the courts!

Eddie, are you interested in a can of 555s ? I read your bio, and you may be interested in knowing that I'm an ex- New Yorker who also played with the Seamco 555s. I recently obtained several cans, and I thought you might like one for old time sake. My name is Andy Krosnick. I used to play in the late 60s to the late 70s on the New York tournament circuit. I partnered with Bobby Schwarz. They used to call me "The Human Fly". Doesn't ring a bell? Oh well........, The next time you come to the courts, ask for me......Andy Here, and we'll talk !! Talk with you soon..............Andy Here

Hi, again, All! Thanks for submitting your comments and for the positive feedback you've all given me! That's just icing on the cake for me to know people appreciate the effort and actually COME here! =o) In my previous submission I forgot to thank someone for whom the courts are a huge priority and who provided aqnd is still providing me copy for this Site and the documents you'll find on the "A Little History" page- WALLY himself! I know you don't "surf" but if you happen to and wind up here- here's my THANKS to you for all the world to see! About the site- it'll be constantly updated and tweaked and I'll add new pictures and pages as it goes along. We're all excited about the upcoming "Challenge" event- I mean, We're gonna have Marty Hogan, Ruben Gonzales, Chris Swain, the Iceman, Robert Sostre and more coming to play on our Historic Garfield Street Paddleball Courts. I'll try to take plenty of pics to post here and maybe if I've got the nerve, get some short interviews with some of the players. About the 555's YEAH!!! I'll try one, what the hey, Andy..... Sorry but I don't recall the name- I was young and dumb in demm days! ;-) BTW- which courts do you play on? We're usually at the HGSC's weekends, late afternoons. I'll just look for the guy bouncing the Seamco around, ok? =oD See ya's all at the courts! D

Thanks for the compliment and thanks for visiting, Kelly!! Hmm- this comment area's perfect for me to try to start something, too... How many of ya's out there would like to get a ball rolling for a "B" tournament? Even if we had to host it ourselves- it sounds to me like a bunch of fun to do and to play in. It'd be a great way to spend a Saturday! And the thing is that WE know who we ARE so none of ya's "A" can sneak in. ;-) Anyone? Just a thought! D

Eddie......just to let you know,........planning yet another 50+ out-of-the-hat tournament for the very end of March.......might even lower the age requirement to 45........since the last tournament was such a success, I thought we could have another for the "senior citizens" yet again. (before too many of them kick the bucket) yuk, yuk !!.........I'd be more then happy to give my expertise on running your "B" tournament.............let me know......I play on "K" court (that's the first court renamed for a great friend to the players at Garfield Street.....Kevin Karwan......who past away nine years ago prematurely of cancer........we still miss Mr. Sportsmanship........a great human being...........anyway just ask for me, AndyHere......at K court

Andy- COOL BEANS!!! All the spectators had a BLAST watching the seniors play- it'd be great to see some more! 45 and up? I'd try it, what the hey! 'Course, I'd have to find a partner to run with! Re: the "B" tourney- I've tossed the idea out there various times and got a good response- everyone was for it- tho would they participate would be the question. I for one, would play and give it my best! I'll talk to the other guys/gals and see how they'd like to proceed and get back to you soon- either on the courts or via this forum. Re: the upcoming "Challenge-" is anyone else reading these posts? By now, if ya's stopped by the courts and read the signs, you gotta realize what's at stake besides the $1000 top prize- The National Outdoor Paddleball Championship! With the Wilson Regular Duty TENNIS BALL as played in Hollywood as the official ball. NO frikkin sh&#!!!! And the brackets are up! We got our HGSPC's best guns against some of the very best in the world! Don't know the names? Look 'em up in Yahoo and you'll get multiple hits on each one of these guys. Make no mistake- THIS is serious stuff and there is gonna be some SERIOUS playing from both sides of the field. There's been "sightings" of some of the "Legends" coming down to our courts to practice, to get the feel of the game and the "Locals" have been getting their workouts themselves. I don't know about anyone ELSE out there but I'm CRANKED for this event! I can't WAIT until Saturday! Eddie

My inputs are that my family and I love the game. Wally knows us. It's the Gilliland family. Each and everyone of us has entered the tournaments and play the game more than occasionally. I myself (Debbie) absolutely love the game. I think it's exiting and refreshing and Wally is doing a FABULOUS job entertaining the people of Hollywood Beach - the courts at G-Street rule. "I CALL NEXT!!" Currently I have no comments because everything is PERFECT. Debra Gilliland

Hi, again, all! For one, I've been surprised by the number of hits this site has gotten- about 140 as I type this (I "blew" up the counter at 111 hits"- and probably mostly from HGSPC's people. Don't worry- I "Blew up" the laptop I used to run the site, so it's safe for another week or so! ;-) Anyway's I've been slinging those little business cards far and wide and I'm also sure many hits have come from word of mouth- Thanks, people and thanks for leaving your feedback!! Also, any ideas for content in this site would be appreciated! Ok- Two days away from Challenge Saturday. Per a previous conversation Wednesday evening at the courts, the "R" word was predicted. I didn't wanna hear it!! It'd be just too cruel on Mother Nature to pull that one on us cuz I'd not expect a rain-date anytime soon! Also- about my idea of a "B" flight tournament- EVERYONE I've talked to has thought it'd be a good thing- so I'm going to take this to the next step. I'll keep you all posted! Regards to all and... set me up a few, will ya's?? Eddie

As Wally's Nephew I must tell everyone that I'm so proud of him and how hard he has worked over the years to keep the Garfield Paddleball Courts alive and well for everyone to use. When the 'best' walk onto the courts for the Challenge, or if you are a spectator enjoying the matches, remember the courts almost became a parking garage. Wally's efforts were for everyone, as he knew that many enjoy the game and that Garfield Street would not be the same if a parking structure were built. Wally is so excited about the Challenge and thankful that for years to come the youth of today will have nice courts to enjoy. It wonderful that the best are coming to play in Wally's backyard, a historic site no less. On this special day please take a moment to ' Thank " my Uncle Wally. He is a legend and a winner. He gets my vote as the Challenge champion. Proudly, Richard Schmidt

Re: Wally- Yup- you got a cool uncle there! Some may take for granted what he's accomplished at the HGSPC's but many of us don't. We appreciate his efforts and that's just one of the reasons we always stop by to say "Hi" to Wally any time we're around or playing. Thanks for your post- THAT'S what I want the spirit of this virtual place to be!!! Now..... Woo!! The day and nite before the "dance" and all of us who are looking forward to "The Challenge" have their eyes on the weather reports for Saturday, February 7th, 2004. Rain all day as one HGSPC'er said he heard? Partly cloudy, is what I heard this mornig, with scattered showers? Well, if positive thoughts can affect the weather, then surely it'll be a great day to play and watch some paddleball at the Historic Garfield Street Paddleball Courts! So this evening as the do-bees are at the "A" court preparing it for "The Challenge" keep those positive thoughts a-perkin'! It's the day before the dance and regardless of the outcome, we're gonna see some OUTSTANDING playing and history WILL be made! I would NOT miss this even for anything! YEAH!! Eddie

I JUST WANTED TO THANK EVERYONE INVOLVED IN THE TOURNAMENT TODAY. FROM THE GUYS WHO MADE THE SHIRTS, CLEAN THE COURTS EARLY THIS MORNING , HUNG THE FLAGS, PLAYED IN THE BAND AND TO EDDIE AND HIS FAMILY. WE (THE LOCALS) HAD A GREAT DAY. CONGRATULATIONS TO MIKE FOR A GREAT FINALS MATCH AND TO PAT FOR WINNING. BOTH OF YOU PLAYED VERY WELL. THANKS FOR ALL THE EXCITEMENT. AND LAST BUT NOT LEAST...... WALLY. THIS WAS A DAY FOR HIM. I WANTED TO PLAY MY VERY BEST AND MOST OF ALL WANTED TO PLAY MY BEST FOR WALLY. HE HAS DONE A LOT FOR OUR GAME AND FOR PROTECTING OUR COURTS OVER THE YEARS. SEE YOU AT THE NEXT TOURNAMENT. Dance they DID and what was the music that was playing? Wipe-out? Speculations were flying Saturday morning, little side-bets being made and us, the spectators were primed for some great paddleball action. We got it! Despite the fact that the "Legends" didn't know the game or even the rules, they got on the courts and played. The "Locals" made us proud, showing their power, finesse and sportsmanship and pretty much taking quick leads and almost every game, just like I thought they would. I may be no sports analyst but I'd predicted our guys would win as they did- and also which one of the legends who'd be able to "hang"- "The Iceman, " Robert Sostre. He exhibited great shot-making, reflexes and tenacity- but how 'bout Cliff Swain? I don't know about the other Legends but those two were there to play and win and it showed! In the end it was Local -vs- Local and though emotions got a little heated at times, the match went off without a hitch. To the crowd's excitement, Mike Merrill took Pat Cassidy to a hotly contested and thrillin' "rubber-match" with Pat winning the final points, the big cash prize and the NPA National Outdoor Paddleball Champion title. Guys- Locals and Legends: our thanks go out to you for playing your very best!! You played with skill, passion and put on a great show and your displays of sportsmanship throughout the tournament were exemplary. Your efforts can only be good for our sport! I for one, am hoping to see you Legends back next year and maybe even hit a few (hey, set me up a few, ok? ;-) with you. I think I speak for all the spectators when I say, "THANKS WALLY!!" >>==> Eddie

Oh, and another thing!!! Now that the NPA has created the National Outdoor Paddleball Championship (NOPC)- THAT in itself being a historic event- I've been pondering certain things as I'm sure you the HGSPC player and fan have been. Is this THE title for OUR version of the sport, "Tennis Ball?" Will tournaments where the NOPC title is to be in contention be "Open" or will players need to qualify in some fashion to advance or be "seeded" in the Tournament? (Dunno if I phrased that correctly- but u get my drift, I hope) and In the case that someone other than a local player wins the NOPC title- will our players have to travel to THEIR home courts to challenge for it? Points to ponder.... now, who do we ask? Regards to all!! >>===> Eddie

<<Web Page Update>> OK, If you browsed the Events page and drilled down into the Challenge pages, you'll notice I "fudged it" up a bit- but I did managed to upload a few pages referring to "The Challenge." You won't see the Page banner on some and the navigation bar won't look quite right but... it all works! I just recently uploaded all the Challenge pics I'll be posting- just gotta get my laptop back to set up a page to display them- so that's coming within the next week. <<>> Coming Soon <<>> V.O.I.C.E <<>> That will be Wally's own page, his corner on the WWW where he can say anything he wants! <> As creator of this site, I want it to remain neutral and will edit content here to suit- but in HIS page, he can let out steam- so look for it soon! <<>> Also, I "threw a ball" out about "Round Robins" for us "B" guys and the idea was well received. All we need is 8 people to have a good one. Someone even suggested a "pot" where each player would chip into and the winner would get at the end. I'm not against that per se- I just want to do it for the fun of it!! Any comments, anyone? Leave them here or see me at the courts!! <<>> One last thing- if you submit comments, just click the button below one time and wait. HEY EDDIE JUST WAS WONDERING IF YOU ARE CLOSE TO GETTING YOUR LAPTOP FIXED AND ABOUT HOW LONG WILL IT BE UNTIL THINGS ARE UP AND RUNNING. I JUST WANT TO SAY A FEW THINGS AND I MEAN NO DISRESPECT. REMEMBER THAT THIS SITE IS TO PROMOTE OUR SPORT, OUR GAME, AND OUR PEOPLE. I AM STARTING TO GET THE FEELING THAT THIS SITE IS NOT SET UP TO HELP OUR SPORT OR TO GIVE VIEWERS OUR PERCEPTION OF THE GAME. I SEE A LOT OF PROMOTING OF THE NEW YORK STYLE OF THE GAME AND STUFF ABOUT HANDBALL, SWITCHING HANDS, AND THE LEGENDS ATHLETES. I WOULD LIKE TO SEE MORE INSITE ABOUT OUR STYLE OF THE GAME AND THE COMPETITIVENESS OF OUR PLAYERS. THIS SITE IS THE (GSHPC) KEEP THAT IN MIND. AS YOU WELL KNOW BY NOW THERE IS A LOT OF HISTORY AT OUR COURTS AND A LOT OF FRIENDSHIPS MADE THERE. THIS IS THE ONLY PLACE THAT I KNOW OF THAT YOU CAN GO AT ANYTIME, ANY DAY, RAIN OR SHINE AND KNOW SOMEONE. THANK YOU FOR ALLOWING ME TO EXPRESS MY OPINION.

Hi, again, All! This makes almost two weeks since I've updated the site- and I know you all out there are getting anxious for coverage of the recent "Challenge" event at the HGSPC's. It's been a while coming, I admit, but sometimes, computers DO crash. In my case, I was lucky enough to be able to salvage all the data in my laptop- but it was definitely a BIG speed-bump on the road to publishing the latest update. <<>> In response to the latest posting- this IS a forum where all can comment and express opinions- and I like the fact that it's being used that way- Keep them coming! <<>> Re: my coverage of other events- 95% of this web site is dedicated to our favorite place to hang out and play OUR sport, "tennis ball" paddleball. I only use the quotes to differentiate it from "black-ball," "blue-ball" and any other variety of paddleball out there. Handball is only mentioned once or twice in my "bio." Right from the top page, you'll read about paddleball on the HGSPC's- Browse on and you'll find out about the history of the place, previous event coverage, coming events and more. 95% of the content in this site is dedicated to <our> sport and if I mention or cover the others (and I WILL), it's because of my background- not because of where I want to take this web-site. <<>> I've stepped up and after uncounted hours and at my own expense, have set this site up for anyone to view, submit stories, articles, pictures, whatever- for publishing here. As stated above, I'll remain neutral and WILL edit any content I deem inappropriate- but everything else, goes! And this "Guest Book" area, again, I repeat- is not the web site but just a tiny portion of it. <<>> This site remains and will remain MY labor of love for the Hollywood game and for the HGSPC's, at my expense and my toil. 'Nuff Sed. Now.... Did I have a next, or did I have a next? See you all at the courts! <<<< Eddie >>>>

Hi, again! <<>> Ok, Fat Tuesday pretty much turned out to be "skinny" as far as I'm concerned! I had to pay $10 to park as it was almost impossible to find a spot, the parade event wasn't and we had a small outage that shut the lights out on the courts for about 1/2 hour. (The excitement of the nite, a transformer blowing up on A1A) Luckily, the lights came back up! All whining aside, the band playing close by played great music to play paddleball by and there were open courts- "A" court had some good doubles games going! I got to play a couple of the teens that evening: they gave me a great work out and we had a blast! Thanks, guys!! Which brings me to a comment about certain power-players- when ya's play with the younger ones? GIVE them a chance to volley- keep your heat in check and save it for the "A" court or other guys. You don't need to clobber the balls at them- we already know you can beat them anytime. Play them for the fun of it, not to show you can crush them with your monster forehands, ok? I don't imagine a win over them very satisfying playing that way, but that's just me...<<>> Re: the Legends posting Challenge pics up- I Emailed Lorri from the NPA to see if she can ask the Legends guys about it. We may hear from her soon- I'll post a URL (web address) if she sends one in her reply. <<>> Regards to all! <<>> Eddie

Hi, Everyone! Excitement's building for this Saturday's upcoming "Holly-Wood" Paddle Open. This tournament has been held here at the HGSPC's since 1970 and like the name says, wooden paddles will be used, as per long-standing tradition- and by me? That's the way it SHOULD be! I use a composite paddle- but for the Open and Invitational 16 tournaments, tradition should prevail, for this is OUR game, OUR way. You don't call it paddleball because it's not a game played with the "black-ball?" It's a paddle and a ball, it's paddleball. I call it "tennis-ball" in this site just to distinguish it from the other versions of the game but on the courts, I call it just what it is; Paddleball. You're entitled to your opinions, we're entitled to ours and the history of our game goes way back- it's nothing new or a fad and it won't go away. You can witness that by seeing the new young faces coming down to the courts and learning the game! <<>> Back to the Open- Who will we see there? Might any new players come down to the Historic Courts on Garfield Street to try to take the Open win? It'll be interesting to see! One way or the other, fans of the game are CRANKED up to see some great matches because the Open brings out the best in every player that participates! <<>> No one stepped forward to sponsor the Open so there'll be a nominal entry fee ($10) and the prizes are dependent on the number of entrants- but it's not the prize money that draws players to the Open- it's winning the bragging rights! <<>> So, see ya's all there bright n early Saturday morning for a great day of paddleball. Look for coverage here on these pages soon!! BTW- THANKS, WALLY, for all your efforts on behalf of our sport! <<>> Eddie

Just staying up to see "The Ten Commandments" for the millionth time. I don't get it. How many times must it take for Ramses to realize "His G-D is G-D". Hi, All! <<>> Hope you all had a great Easter Weekend! <<>> Some of us did and even got to spend some time on the courts- a bonus! <<>> I won't mention any names but most of you HGSPC regulars who read this will know who I'm referring to- On April 15th, friends from the HGSPC's will welcome a new addition to their family and from our "crew" to yours, we want to wish you the very best and congratulate you! And we hope your injury heals quick and you're just like new! We miss you on the courts! Also to another recently injured but now back on the courts- welcome back! We can tell what makes ya smile- puttin' in a good kill!! ;-) <<>> Takes-ya-back dept- Sheesh- This Sunday while watching the games on "A" court, I noticed a guy holding what seemed to be a Black Beauty paddle- I went over to check it out an sure enough, it WAS- a Black Beauty "L." I asked to check it out and wow- this thing was almost in perfect shape and even had the original lanyard, what-the hey?? Holding and swinging that thing took me back more than a few years! These days I don't think I could play with a Black Beauty- L (which stood for "light" or H- the dang thing felt like a boat anchor! I didn't get to hit a ball with it but I heard the sound of the hit as the guy played a game- and it sounded as solid as I remember it sounding. One of these days I'll dig mine out... <<>> have a great week, everyone! See ya's on the courts! <<>> Eddie

Hi all! <<>> Another weekend come and gone, dayum! I agree with that bumper-sticker that says 2 days work and 5 days off, but such is life. All we can do is make the best out of the time off we DO have. Some family time at Hollywood Beach just hangin' or on the courts watching the games or playing is the stuff good weekends are made of for many of us- we know who we be! It doesn't cost much, fresh air and good clean fun. Paddleball Pete is right- friendships are made on the Historic Courts. I can't say enough good things about the cool people that hang out there. Hmm... give a guy a soap-box, huh? Anyways- this one's just to let ya's know there's a quick mini update featuring Joe's BBQ & pics coming up later this week. Hi, All!! <<>> Well, "Paddleball Season" is waning and here come the dog days of summer- and there is one last "official" tournament at the HGSPC's- the 7-11's Under the Lights Kid's Tournament, this Friday May 14th at 7PM. And as with every other one that's taken place at the HGSPC's, I wanna be there for that one too! Me and my digital cam will be there getting the shots of the kids in action- and permission to post from the parents! One only has to watch these kids playing to realize these are the up and comers. These kids have the basics, the hustle and more- just come and see and cheer them on! <<>> re: the latest Update? It's in the works! I must confess, I've been a bit lazy but after a whole day slavin' over hot computers, I just couldn't get myself to power up the laptop and start on the update until just recently. This one's gonna be something to see- The HGSPC's evening regulars, at Hollywood's CLUB-M along with Sammy's band, Re-Wind, livin' it up, Sunday Nite. <<>> We listened to some great tunes and had ourselves a great time! <<>> See you all this Friday!!! <<>> Eddie

Suggestions are definitely welcome! <<>> Another mini-update coming soon. There won't be any coverage of the Girfield St. Ladies' Tournament as that didn't happen- no one signed up- so Kelly's still the Ladies' Champ! I took a little trip up to Spring Hill, FL and went to the Deltona St courts there- and met some of the cool people that play there- I even got a few games in- Black ball!! Yeah, it's strange going back to THAT!!! It was funny because while I practiced tennis ball, guys kept coming by and asking me if I wanted a "regular" ball, offering me a black or green one- I told them I ALREADY had a regular ball- a Wilson Regular Duty one!! Me thinks to stick to tennis ball tho I will play the other whenever "I'm in Rome..." Regards, all! See ya's on the courts! <<>> Eddie

The following is a post I made in the http:www.propaddles.com website. For those of you who aren't up to speed on it- that's the website for blackball paddleball in Miami. Can you tell I'm lookin' to crank this thing up? I for one, am very excited about the upcoming Open tournament- And I'd love to see some black-ball guys from Miami come try their luck at our version of the sport. Read on <<>> "Hi again All. Just back from an all paddleball day and I wanted to be the first to post after the Stars n Stripes tournament- and unluess this thing crashes- I AM! I want to be your peanut gallery from the Historic Courts on Garfield Street in Hollywood in a sense. I also want to congratulate all the players for your skill and sportsmanship in your games. The winners earned it- great game, guys!!! WEPA, Al! Henry, I want to congratulate YOU on a fun event! Sonny and other sponsors, you have my thanks and I'm sure everyone who attended thank you too! Now. You all saw me- I was the bald guy hitting that tennis ball and I'm gonna probably get grief for my next comments from everywhere- but here goes... I'm throwing down a challenge for the best of blackball paddleball to come try their skill and see if they can win themselves $800- that's the winner's purse at the upcoming tournament at the Historic Courts. The 2 & 3rd prizes are fairly healthy too. Anyone who reads this and plays well can come try it. Tennis ball is a bit slower but just as challenging as blackball due to the spins and the rules we follow. Visit my website for the rules. And I'm thinking, Henry.... We can make something of this. Start us a lil rivalry, just to stir things up and increase awareness of our respective versions of paddleball. So what say guys? You're gonna TRY it?? I don't know if there will be any cool tee-shirts (thanks, Henry!!)but $800'not a bad 1st prize, is it? Just BRING it!!! B-) See ya's at the courts! And don't forget to set me up a few! Hi, All!! New update is UP~!!! To any visitor who may care, click on the following link for coverage of the recent Stars & Stripes Black-Ball Paddleball tournament that took place in Miami. Stars & Stripes There was some awesome playing on this day- these people HAVE to see that dang ball in "bullet-time-" I just KNOW it!! Most times all I saw was a black blur!! I'm wanting to see some of black-ball's best players trying the Tennis ball version of the sport and vice-versa!!! Any takers? I put up my challenge for the next tournament at the Historic Courts- but- An update on that "upcoming" tournament- is that it MAY not happen. I'm really hustling, trying to help make something happen but with every phone call I make it seems more and more unlikely and that's too bad. If I had the cash to spare, I'd put it up myself, just to see some paddleball action at the Historic Courts. Stay tuned- I won't give up so easily! Regards all and Hey- see ya's at the courts. On staying away from the game: I can't!! Even if I just go to watch, I've gone to the Historic Courts on Garfield Street more often than not in the last couple of weeks. What an addict! So where's the local chapter of the PBA? (Paddle Baller's Anonymous) "Hi, I'm Eddie and I'm a Paddleball Addict." Go figure. At least it's helping me quit smoking! 3 weeks today at 1:30 PM and a LOT of the tensions from the nicotine fits have been worked out on the courts. Hi, Again, Everyone! For anyone who's been reading this "log," here's an update on the "All-Paddle" Open. It's actually not named that- that's just what I'm calling it- As of yet, there is no prize money from the guys that wanted to sponsor- thye've got until August 1st- Wally's in the process of seeking another sponsor. I'll know more by this afternoon. As far as the date goes, I'm not certain that will stay the same. Time is needed to prepare and publicize the event- there's LOTS of work that go into one of these tournament things! And speaking of events? There's a BIG one coming up with $25,000 in prizes. Hi Again, everyone! Ok, so far- it's ON!! WHAT'S on?? ~~~The Men's Open Paddleball Tournament!~~~ And the courts are buzzin' with the excitement upcoming events create. On any given nite, you'll see guys you haven't seen in a while at the courts practicing or playing. Time is short- here comes the 21st of August! Bring your best game, everyone- you're gonna NEED it!! And my challenge STILL stands for any of the Flamingo Park Black-Ball Paddleball regulars: come on up and try for that $800 top prize. Yeah, it's a b i g o l' y e l l a t e n n i s b a l l. But it's not how big it is it's how you hit that thang. ;-) On to other things- just back from a quick go-round of http://www.tenniswelcomecenter.com- and my comments? Want to limber up? Want to get away from the bar scene or meet new & cool people? Wanna blow off stress like no tomorrow? Wanna increase agility, build your legs arms & chest? Play PADDLEBALL!! HERE COMES THE OPEN!!!!!!!!! And fans of Paddleball at the Historic Courts are all KINDS of cranked! Prospective tournament entrants have been hittin' the Historic Courts all week in preparation for the Games. Olympic drama? Phhhht!!! We're gonna have drama RIGHT on the Historic Courts on Garfield Street when the best break out their A+ games and serve up. What might add to the drama could be some black-ball players taking up the challenge, but somehow, I don't think so. I think no one's paying attention or even READING these entries... but here they are anyone for the world to read. So BRING IT, everyone! A lawn chair, umbrella, sunscreen, Gatorade, your camera and get ready for a great day of Paddleball spectatin' thanks to the fine folks at I See Optical, Sheridan St & 441, Wally and Tri Pircalabu. ~~~~Oh- speaking of cameras- I lost my digital cam at the courts. It's a Kodak, in a padded black cloth case with a memory stick. It's not a big deal or expensive camera but I'd love to get it back and would appreciate it immensely if whoever found it would return it to me.... yes, there is a reward: that you did a good deed. Hi, again, Everyone! First off, I want to say, "GET WELL, WALLY and take good care," to your friend and mine. I got grumbles but this isn't the forum to voice them on: I'll just say, sooner or later, everyone pays and leave it at that. We hope to see you back real soon, Wally! <<>> Now, recenlty, I got into a conversation at the courts and heard we were losing the 2 west courts to a new parking facility that's to be built where the current parking lot is now. Needless to say, I was alarmend but knew JUST who to go to to get the facts- Wally! the Answer? We're not losing a thing- maybe the view of the setting sun and the boats going by on the Intracoastal but that's it. The parking garage will STAY in the lot and our beloved Historic Courts will remain untouched. Heaven help whichever elected official touches the Historic Courts- cuz that person would lose THOUSANDS of votes all because of us Paddleball players! <<>> 'Nuff sed! Annnnnd... the 75th Anniversary of the Historic Courts is coming up! I urge you ALL to chip in to make this Anniversary Celebration the one all others will be compared to from then on! Help where ever you can, donate generously! <<>> See ya's all on the courts! Oh- and stay tuned for the next update: it's gonna be a good one! In my humble opinion. ;-) <<>> Eddie

Nothing to do, Cicero? Well, let's see... I voted bright and early this morning and my evening is free. What to do? Hmmm... Go to the Historic Courts! With luck there was a small crew of HGSP regulars that were there too and we had us some FUN games! We're all hurtin' for certain but not enough to not be able to get up and hit some! =oD Yeah, some of us were smothering parts of our bodies in pain reliving creams, but we were OUT there! Where were YOU? I for one am glad I have this bad paddleball habit vs some of the habits I had in my stupid youth. I admire the younger guys and girls that have become "regulars" for getting the habit too. Do as I say, not as I did! =oD Regards to all! Sheesh, I can babble! See ya's on the courts! <<>> D

PS- About the above? I'm FRIKKIN CRANKED!! Why? Well... I've played outdoor racquetball and it's a blast! We can get that yella' ball going pretty damn fast with paddles- but a racquet and ball are yet another dimension in speed. Will we see some of the Legends going after some of that prize money? I'd LOVE to see that! Being used to those pinch shots, etc will put them at a sliiiiight disadvantage against the guys that play that outdoor ball.... I'm expecting incredible fun watching this level of play and I'm hoping that this event won't be postponed. Stay tuned! <<>> Eddie

Ok, it's the Friday before the World Outdoor Racquetball tournament... I stopped by the Historic Courts last night- coming down Surf Road onto Connecticut and the sounds I heard coming from the courts were the familiar sounds of racquetball! If you've been visiting this site or know me, you know my background- I used to play this game and I'd try ANY such sport or variation thereof. I gotta admit I felt like a hick in the big city- I couldn't WAIT to park the car to go check out the action cuz I knew that players for the WOR tournament would have made it out early just to get a feel for the courts. "WTH game are you guys playing," I hollered as I walked on to the courts- this gave everyone pause to look over, then it was back to business. Racquetball!!! I had grabbed my paddle bag and on second thought, grabbed a racquet and can of balls- but I would not even consider getting on the court with these guys except for lessons from them! ;-) I spent a fun couple of hours watching these guys play, many times amazed at the quickness, power and control these guys bring to the Outdoor Racquetball game. The spectators included Locals, HGSPC regulars and Legends- and all of us had a blast- it was THE place to be in Hollywood, last nite (I'll bet they're there tonite, also!!!) <<>> Yeah, I know it's not paddleball and this site IS dedicated to "Tennis Ball-" but ya's know what? I'm going to cover this event and give it the billing it deserves. These players have come from all over the country to our part of the world and by me they are welcome this time and any time. The matches they will have will be the stuff many of us are gonna talk about for days to come. Hope to see ya's all there! <<>> Eddie

Eddie, Yes it's true......at last......We finally honor a great American Hero.....Right here at Garfield St. A drum roll please........Forrest....Forrest Gump!! After years of planning this unbelieveable paddleball event (actually I thought it up in the shower in a couple of minutes), it has finally come to a reality!! On SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 5th, 2005, The first ( and possibly the only) Forrest.....Forrest Gump Paddleball Doubles Tournament will be hosted by the semi famous tournament planner....Andy Here. Prizes will not be given to any of the participants. Andy will however give some recycled trophies he swiped from his brother's trophy case. Now for the great news.......it doesn't cost a dime to enter!!.....That's right OH Canada......IT'S FREE....to all participants!! There is a catch.....you must be at least 45 YEARS OLD. In other words, it's for the OLDER players only. This format will be very different from all other tournaments. Each team will serve 5 times, then go on defense. And this is the best part of all........the defensive team can score when the serving team is serving!!! Too confusing ? Andy will explain everything on that Saturday February 5th morning. So come on over to Garfield Street and check it out!!.......Remember "Life is like Paddleball, you never know what you're gonna get" (PLEASE NOTE: CHECK IN TIME IS....... 9:00AM) See all you players at the courts!!...............Andy Here

Eddie, On Saturday, FEBRUARY 5th, 2005, the semi famous tournament planner, Andy Here will bring to the Garfield Street Paddleball Courts a unique tournament format. A DRUM ROLL PLEASE.........The FORREST, FORREST GUMP DOUBLES TOURNAMENT. This unique tournament will pair two great games in one........Paddleball & Ping Pong!! I know what you're thinking, Andy has sniffed too many tennis balls. No I haven't........ I've planned this tournament for years!! (actually, it came to me when I was in the shower the other day) PRIZES WILL not BE awarded. Trophies that I swiped from my brother's trophy case will be recycled (the winners will be responsible for taking off the giant Lawn Dart on each of the trophies) and given to the 1st & 2nd Place teams. The Catch......this tournament is for players 45 YEARS & OLDER..........The best part.........it's FREE.....that's right OH CANADA.....not a dime !! The unique format will have each team serve 5 times, then play defense. But the best part is.....the Defensive team can score as well!!....Confused ?....Don't worry, Andy will explain Everything on that February 5th morning So come and honor a great American Hero...Forrest, Forrest Gump and have a great time too !! Remember,....."Life is like Paddleball, you never know what you're gonna get" ( PLEASE NOTE: TO ENTER..... PLEASE BE AT THE COURTS @ ......... 9 : 0 0 AM on FEB.5th 2005 )

Noooo, I was not there to play in my work attire and shoes but I was still wanting to hit some, so I got a few in. The loss was avoidable and coincidental. ;-) Hey- Wally's working away on the Historic Courts' 75th Anniversary bash planned for March 12-13! Help out where you can- it's gonna be a great time!! Since moving from the Big Apple to Southern Florida, 17 years ago this month, I have met many wonderful souls. Kevin Karwin comes to mind almost instantaneous. John Dewitt, Kelly (Quinn) D"Andrea, Mike (Lefty) Lecesse and a slew of other wonderful people as well. Tony G is on this list. He has quietly promoted paddleball down on Garfield as much as anyone else. His presence will be missed greatly. I have personally run some of his sponsored paddleball tournaments. I can say in all honesty, Tony G. WAS the most generous of any sponsor Garfield Street has ever known. He was a larger then life fixture not only around the courts, but down by the beach as well. He was the unofficial "Mayor of Garfield Street" !!......Again,He will be missed. Condolences to Rose, Phil and the rest of the Giardina Family up in Waltham, Mass............AndyHere

Hi, everyone!! Lazy me finally uploaded coverage of the Historic Courts' 75th and of the Garfield St All-Stars Tournament! If you're on dial-up, be patient as the pages load. I suggest, oh.... go make a pot of coffee or something. ;-) There are MANY pics to see! And speaking of which- yes, I noticed they look very dark. It's kinda strange cuz they looked ok on the laptop I use to edit the site- but when I viewed them from another PC I could barely see details in the pics cuz they were so dark. I've since adjusted the gamma one each and every pic- but I've got to upload them to the site from a faster connection, not from dial-up- I'll do that soon! All-Stars players- If you've still not recieved your CD's from me, see me on the courts or drop me a quick Email at gspaddles@gshistoriccourts.org I'll make sure to keep the CD's handy for you. My father told me at a young age, that there were "Takers" and there were "Givers". Since moving to South Florida in 1988, I have met both Takers and Givers. Among the top of the Giver list was a friend simply called Candy Man. The trouble with Dave Karson (Candy Man), he couldn't Give enough. He couldn't GIVE enough of his time, couldn't GIVE enough of his money, he couldn't give enough.......period. He was, by far the most generious person I have met since moving here. I am very fortunite to have known him. Dave Karson past away at the age of 57 last week on April 6th. He wasn't the best paddleball player. That didn't matter. His presence down at Garfield St., spoke volumes of the human being he was. The best things he has left behind, are two special people......Tasha, his daughter, and Ryan, his son. Through their eyes, their souls, his memory will live on. Yes, Dave was a Giver......and that's the way I'll remember him......Rest In Peace my friend.......AndyHere

Eddie, I am hoping you remember me, Angel, from the racquetball tournament. I was hoping I could pick your brains on something. I am looking to start a website similar to yours here but with Outdoor Racquetball as the topics. If you can mentor me a little bit I would appreciate it. How did you get started, web space, and any other topics you could share. Thanks. thisis4angel@yahoo.com

Angel, thanks for visiting the Historic Courts unofficial web site- YEAH, I remember you! I'll Email you my number so we can talk- or email me at this site- just click the spinning Envelope picture at the bottom of the page. But for general info, I used Front Page 2000- easy to learn but basic. Someday when I grow up, I'm gonna re-do this site in Flash... yeah right! LOL!! Re: Web site hosting- there's free hosting out there but the one service I use is fairly cheap, at under $100 for the year including the domain name. I have to say it's not the cost that gets you- it's the amount of hours you spend creating and updating the site. If I had to charge per hour for this site, I'd have a souped up Kharman Ghia by now. Seriously, tho- drop me a quick Email and lets get the ball rollin'- I'llbe glad to help! Regards!! <<>> "Tennis Ball" Eddie

ARGH!!! Spammed again!! Readers, be sure to NOT click on any of the links found in any of the above Emails. As a network geek, I avoid that kind of stuff like the plague- you never know where the links may lead to or what you may pick up!! Be sure I'll clean that stuff up next update! Regards to all- See ya's on the courts! <<>> "Tennis Ball" Eddie

Just a quick one to thank Andy Here for pointing out that this "Guest Book" got spammed. I don't know HOW many entries there were or where they all pointed to but you can bet a can of Wilsons and your woodie that it was to no where good! Readers; never follow a link posted in a page as those were- if they resort to such methods as spamming guest logs to publicize their sites, what evil little programs they could dump into your PC when you go to their web-sites, the paddleball gods don't even know. Word! <<>>Also, Andy Here mentioned to me about a handball tournament down in Miami with a BIG purse? You know the best are gonna be there and among those best is Iceman Robert Sostre... If you wanna see where all that skill came from, this is his "seed" game- Handball! Stay tuned! See ya's all on the Courts! Again, THANKS, Andy! <<>> "Tennis Ball" Eddie
